About Us

In 1979, Father Tom and Sister Peggy brought hundreds of disabled worshipers to hear Pope John Paul II speak on the Boston Common. While a great deal of the crowd fled a downpour, the disabled community remained. As did Father Tom and Sister Peggy. And from that event the Simon of Cyrene Society grew under the caring guidance of both. Since that time the Simon of Cyrene Society has continued to serve the disabled community, growing from a small group of nine in South Boston to touch over 500 individuals and their families in 55 communities in Massachusetts. Whether seeking support, advice, and services, every member finds a community willing to help carry the burden. Originally, a community of shared worship for the disabled, the Simon of Cyrene Society has grown beyond any one particular creed. Today it welcomes all members of the disabled community through spiritual and social support, advocacy, and respite opportunities.
